Summer Camp

CTB-WI holds a week long (5-nights/6-days) residential summer camp for siblings separated by the foster care system. Held at Camp Anokijig in Plymouth, the camp is structured like any other summer camp experience: swimming, watercraft, horse-back riding, campfires and s'mores are some of the activities campers enjoy. Special to CTB-WI are our Signature Programs. These Signature Events are designed and facilitated to support the mental, emotional and relational health of the youth with their siblings. Many of the activities give the children opportunities to express themselves to each other and give them tangible items to take home with them. These tangible items serve as powerful reminders of their week with their siblings.

Birthday Party

Siblings choose gifts for one another from a “shop” of donated/pre-purchased gifts, wrap them, and create birthday cards for their brother or sister. One evening is dedicated to a camp-wide birthday party where sibling groups celebrate with individual family birthday cakes and gift exchanges. The party serves to make up for missed opportunities to celebrate important life occasions together.

Sibling Pillows

Siblings create and exchange pillows with personal messages to provide a take-home keepsake and the space for the articulation of their feelings.

Life Empowerment Seminar

Participants ages 14 and over attend the Life Empowerment Seminar program designed to empower older youth to advocate for their rights and provide education on the options and resources available for college and career readiness.  The goal of the Seminar is to help youth succeed after they have aged out of the foster care system and prevent them from becoming another statistic on failure.

Scrapbooks

Each kid is provided a scrapbook, materials and printed photos of their week at camp. They create a visual representation of their experiences and memories and use this take-home keepsake as a place to write messages to one another and personal reflections on the week.  For many, this scrapbook will contain the only pictures they have from their childhood.

Inspiration Night

This activity is an evening designed to reduce isolation, empower youth and provide positive role models. From inspirational guest speakers to sibling sharing, Inspiration Night contributes to the youths’ ability to respond to conflict and improve self-esteem and self-efficacy.

Carnival

A fun night! Camps typically hire outside companies to set up games and inflatables at the host site.  This evening provides an opportunity for campers to spend time with others who are living in their shoes and just have a good time making friends and bonding with their siblings.

Campfires

At the opening and closing campfires participants are given opportunities to come up and express how they are feeling. They talk about that their siblings mean to them and that they had a sense of belonging by being with other children that are in situations similar to their own. There are not many places where they can experience this sense of belonging.
